Classical Conditioning

Unit 3 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Classical items are won by labeling UCS, UCR, CS, and CR in a novel pairing — and by not importing a consequence of behavior from 3.8. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.

People change on a clock. Learning is not a personality; it is a consequence you can name.

Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.

A scene you already lived

Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.

The clinic corridor smells of antiseptic. Your stomach tightens before anyone has mentioned a needle. Last year a jab in that room was followed by nausea from a stomach bug that had nothing to do with the clinic. Now the smell is enough. Nobody rewarded you for feeling sick. Two events were paired. That is classical conditioning: a stimulus that predicted another stimulus, until the first one started pulling some of the response. What the paper actually asks

These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.

  • Label UCS, UCR, CS, CR in a novel pairing — no blanks.
  • Apply acquisition, extinction, generalization, and discrimination.
  • Keep classical as stimulus–stimulus association, not a consequence of behavior.

The mechanism

Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.

Classical conditioning is a stimulus–stimulus association. A neutral stimulus is paired with an unconditioned stimulus (UCS) that already pulls an unconditioned response (UCR). After pairing, the former neutral stimulus is a conditioned stimulus (CS) and the learned response to it is a conditioned response (CR). Label all four in a novel pairing. Do not leave blanks.

Processes. Acquisition: the pairing is learned; the CR grows. Extinction: the CS is presented without the UCS; the CR fades. Spontaneous recovery: after a rest, the CR can return to the CS, weaker. Generalization: similar stimuli pull some of the CR. Discrimination: the organism learns which CS predicts the UCS and which similar cue does not.

Pavlov’s method: a metronome or tone paired with food; salivation measured. A bell-and-saliva sketch is not a life. It is a controlled pairing with a clear operational definition of the CR.

Little Albert is a historical demonstration of a conditioned fear to a white rat after pairing with a loud noise. Qualitative only. Do not invent a rat-count statistic. Ethical limit is the point: an infant, distress, no clear undoing. It is not a how-to.

Taste aversion is a special case: one trial can be enough, and the delay between taste and illness can be long. It does not obey the usual ‘immediate pairing, many trials’ classroom sketch. Limits: do not invent Garcia’s numbers; the claim is the special timing, not a journal citation. This page is not operant conditioning. Operant is a behavior changing because of its consequence. Negative reinforcement does not belong in a classical-labeling item except as a wrong neighbor to reject.

Words worth owning

A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.

Unconditioned stimulus (UCS)

A stimulus that already pulls a response without this learning (food, a loud noise, illness).

Confusable. Not the CS. The CS started as neutral and gained its pull through pairing.

Conditioned stimulus (CS)

A once-neutral stimulus that, after pairing with a UCS, comes to pull a conditioned response.

Confusable. Not the UCS, and not a reward for a behavior (that is operant language).

Conditioned response (CR)

The learned response to the CS after pairing.

Confusable. Often looks like the UCR but is tied to the CS. Do not call it negative reinforcement.

Acquisition

The phase when pairing builds the CS–UCS association and the CR grows.

Confusable. Not extinction, which is CS-alone and a fading CR.

Extinction (classical)

Presenting the CS without the UCS until the CR fades.

Confusable. Not unlearning as a deleted file — spontaneous recovery can show the association is not simply gone.

Spontaneous recovery

The return of a faded CR after a rest, when the CS is presented again.

Confusable. Not acquisition from scratch, and not operant shaping.

Generalization (classical)

Stimuli similar to the CS pull some of the CR.

Confusable. Discrimination is learning which similar cues do not predict the UCS.

Taste aversion

A special classical case: a taste paired with illness can become a CS after one trial, even with a delay.

Confusable. Not the usual many-trial immediate pairing sketch, and not a consequence that was arranged to punish eating.

A study you can actually use

Classic or labeled hypothetical. Either way: what was done, what was found, what it cannot claim.

Pavlov’s pairing method (as method)

What was done
A sound (or similar cue) was paired with food. Salivation was measured to the food and, after pairing, to the cue alone.
Finding
A cue that had not pulled saliva began to do so after it predicted food — a controlled demonstration of a stimulus–stimulus association with a clear operational CR.
Limit — what it cannot claim
A bell-and-saliva sketch is not a life. Humans have language, rules, and extra cues. The method isolates pairing; it does not finish a theory of a commute or a clinic.
How AAQ would probe it
Method: experiment / controlled pairing. Variable: presence of the cue with food vs the CR (salivation) as measured. Application: label CS and CR. Limit: species, lab, operational definition.

Little Albert (historical demonstration)

What was done
An infant was presented with a white rat (and other cues) paired with a loud noise. Later reactions to the rat and to similar objects were described.
Finding
Fear responding appeared to the rat after pairing, with some spread to similar cues — a qualitative historical demonstration of conditioned emotional responding and generalization.
Limit — what it cannot claim
Ethical limit is the point: an infant, distress, no clear informed consent, no clear undoing. Qualitative only. Do not invent how many rats or a percentage. It is not a how-to, and a classroom summary is not the original protocol.
How AAQ would probe it
Ethic: protection from harm and/or informed consent — identify one and say how it was not applied. Method: a demonstration with pairing, not a modern well-controlled experiment. Application: CS = rat; UCS = loud noise, as the account is usually taught.

Someone’s Tuesday

If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.

A bus brake-squeal that once came just before a stomach-turning lurch now tightens your gut on a quiet street. The squeal is the CS; the lurch (or the nausea it went with) is the UCS story. A school bell that predicted a spicy lunch can make your mouth water or your eyes sting depending on what was paired. A perfume that predicted a person can pull a body state when the person is not there. Nobody paid you for the body state. Two stimuli were associated. If a stem instead stops a beep when you buckle a belt, that is a consequence of a behavior — the next topic.

Where clever students go wrong

The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.

Calling every learned body state ‘negative reinforcement’ is the expensive mix with 3.8. Classical is pairing, not a payoff for an act. Pop posts that treat Little Albert as a cute demo skip the ethics. Taste-aversion posts that invent how many rats Garcia used are not evidence. A bell-and-saliva cartoon is a method sketch, not your whole emotional life.

Walkthrough

UCS = the lurch (already pulls gut response). UCR = stomach drop to the lurch. CS = brake squeal after pairing. CR = stomach drop to the squeal. Extinction: squeal many times without a lurch until the CR fades. If it returns after a weekend off buses, that is spontaneous recovery. This is not a buckle-beep consequence.

The move

UCS lurch, UCR gut response to lurch, CS squeal, CR gut response to squeal. Extinction = squeal without lurch. Not operant.

Pairing method, then the four labels

Say the move in your own mouth. If you can write it, you own it — rereading is not the same thing.

Original practice source, not a published paper. A lab pairs a blue light with a puff of lemon spray that already makes people blink and salivate. After several pairings the blue light alone produces a blink. Identify the method. Then label the CS and the CR as this study uses them.

Move: AAQ: controlled pairing / experiment. CS = blue light; CR = blink to the light. Do not call it a schedule of reinforcement.
