Social, Cognitive, and Neurological Factors in Learning
Unit 3 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. These items want observational learning, insight, and latent learning kept distinct from shaping — plus a named limit on who was watched and what was measured. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.
People change on a clock. Learning is not a personality; it is a consequence you can name.
Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.
A scene you already lived
Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.
A younger cousin copies a celebration they only watched on a screen — the same hop, the same pointing at the sky — and has never been coached through it. No one shaped that hop with a treat. A model did the work, and whether the model was cheered or ignored will change how likely the copy is. Learning is not only pairing and not only consequences to your own body. This page is observational learning, the extra cognitive pieces (insight, latent learning, self-efficacy), and a hard limit on what a lab model, or a neuron headline, can claim.
What the paper actually asks

The mechanism
Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.
Observational learning: a person changes by watching a model, not only by being directly reinforced. Attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation are Bandura’s usual four jobs. Vicarious reinforcement: seeing the model rewarded makes copying more likely. Vicarious punishment: seeing the model pay a cost makes copying less likely. Self-efficacy: the belief that you can produce a version of the act — a social-cognitive factor, not a mood slogan.
Bandura’s Bobo-doll work is the classroom classic: children watched an adult model aggression toward a doll; later behavior toward the doll was the measure. Limits: era, sample, a lab toy, a short session. Lab aggression toward a doll is not destiny, not a diagnosis, and not ‘this child will become violent.’ Name who was watched and what was measured.
Keep two cognitive demonstrations distinct from shaping. Insight (Köhler, historical): a sudden reorganization of a problem, often after a pause, not a staircase of reinforced approximations. Latent learning (Tolman, historical): learning that is not visible in performance until there is a reason to show it — rats in a maze building a cognitive map without a food payoff, then running well once food appeared. Shaping is operant: reinforce closer and closer acts. Insight and latent learning are the exam’s reminder that not all learning is a visible consequence to this body in this moment.
Mirror neurons: cells that fire both when an act is done and when it is watched, reported in some animal (and debated human) work. Mention only with a hard limit. They do not ‘explain empathy’ as settled science. A headline is not a mechanism you retrieve for marks. A modeling study is only as strong as its model and its measure. If the model was a peer versus a celebrity, if a camera was on, if the DV was a questionnaire or a hit to a doll — those bounds are the claim.

Words worth owning
A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.
Observational learning
Learning by watching a model, without needing a direct consequence to the observer’s own act in that moment.
Confusable. Not shaping (which reinforces the observer’s successive approximations).
Vicarious reinforcement
Seeing a model rewarded, which makes the observer more likely to copy the act.
Confusable. Vicarious punishment is seeing the model pay a cost, which makes copying less likely.
Self-efficacy
The belief that you can produce a version of a specific act — a social-cognitive factor in whether a modeled skill is attempted.
Confusable. Not global self-esteem, and not a UCS.
Insight (Köhler, historical)
A sudden reorganization of a problem that yields a solution, often after a pause — not a shaped staircase.
Confusable. Not latent learning (which can be gradual and hidden), and not 3.8 shaping.
Latent learning (Tolman, historical)
Learning that occurs without being visible in performance until there is a reason to show it (a cognitive map unused until a payoff appears).
Confusable. Not insight’s sudden ‘aha,’ and not shaping of the running response.
Cognitive map
An internal representation of a layout that can guide later performance even if it was not being rewarded while it was built.
Confusable. Not a photograph of the maze, and not a CR to a tone.
Mirror neurons (with limit)
Cells reported to fire both when an act is performed and when it is observed — mention only with a hard limit.
Confusable. Do not retrieve them as a settled explanation of empathy or of a whole personality.
A study you can actually use
Classic or labeled hypothetical. Either way: what was done, what was found, what it cannot claim.

- What was done
- Children watched an adult model act aggressively toward an inflatable doll, in some versions with the model rewarded, ignored, or paying a cost. Later, children were observed with a similar doll.
- Finding
- Children often produced similar acts, and consequences to the model mattered for later performance — a demonstration of observational learning and vicarious consequences, as the classroom account is usually taught.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Era, sample, a lab toy, a short session. Hitting a doll is not destiny and not a diagnosis. Who was watched (an adult in a lab) and what was measured (acts toward a doll) bound the claim. Do not invent a percentage.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: experiment (arranged model / consequence to model). Variable: what the model did, or what happened to the model; DV = later acts toward the doll. Ethic: exposure to aggression, distress, caregiver consent. Limit: lab doll ≠ life.

- What was done
- Researchers randomly assign classes to watch a same-age peer complete a hard problem while a teacher praises the process, or to watch the same problem with no peer. They then score whether students attempt a new but related problem and how they rate ‘I can do a version of this.’
- Finding
- If the peer-model group attempts more and rates efficacy higher, a fair claim is that this model plus praise changed attempts and ratings in this sample — not that personality changed, and not that insight occurred.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Labeled hypothetical. Who was watched (a peer, not a celebrity) and what was measured (attempts and a rating, not a semester grade) bound the claim. A camera in a classroom is not a street. Do not invent a journal.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: experiment. IV: peer model with praise vs none. DVs: attempt on a transfer problem; self-efficacy rating as operationalized. Limit: model identity and measure. Application: observational learning + self-efficacy.
Someone’s Tuesday
If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.
A football/soccer celebration copied from a screen, a chess opening copied from a classmate, a bus route you could draw only when you needed to get to an exam: three different tools. The celebration is observational learning (and maybe vicarious reinforcement if the crowd roared). The exam-day route is latent learning — the map was there without a payoff until it was needed. A geometry problem that sits dead for ten minutes and then reorganizes is closer to insight than to a coach shaping each line of the proof. None of those is a mirror-neuron headline about empathy.
Where clever students go wrong
The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.
‘Mirror neurons explain empathy’ as settled science is the neuromyth to park. Bobo is not a prophecy about a child. Shaping is not insight and not latent learning — if a stem is a staircase of treats for closer acts, you are in 3.8. A model who is a lab adult is not a peer, and a doll-hit count is not a life. Self-efficacy is specific (‘I can do a version of this proof’), not a global vibe.

The shortcut is latent learning: the layout was acquired without being shown until a reason appeared. Neither is shaping unless someone reinforced Nia’s successive approximations of walking or proving.
