Communication and Language Development
Unit 3 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Language items want the unit that actually changed (phoneme vs morpheme vs syntax) and a theory with a limit — not a left-brain personality story. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.
People change on a clock. Learning is not a personality; it is a consequence you can name.
Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.
A scene you already lived
Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.
A toddler on the train says ‘goed’ for went, then looks pleased. The adult opposite hears a mistake. A language researcher hears a rule: the child has a past-tense pattern and is applying it too widely. That is not cute chaos. It is development you can name — sounds, meaning-bits, order, and use in a social turn. This page is the map of those units, the usual sequence from babbling to two-word speech, and the theories that try to explain how a human gets there without pretending a single slogan won.
What the paper actually asks
These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.
- Separate phoneme, morpheme, syntax, and semantics in a short stem.
- Apply critical-period and statistical-learning ideas without neuromyth.
- Read a methods claim about input and vocabulary with a limit.
The mechanism
Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.
Language has parts you must keep distinct. A phoneme is a sound that can change meaning (sip/zip). A morpheme is a meaning-bearing unit (the -ed on walked; the word dog). Syntax is the allowed order of words. Semantics is meaning. Pragmatics is use in a social situation — taking turns, adjusting to the listener. Mixing phoneme with morpheme is an expensive miss.
Typical production sequence, as a classroom map not a stopwatch: babbling (including sounds of the languages heard), one-word (holophrastic) speech, two-word telegraphic combinations, then longer sentences. Overregularization (goed, tooths) is a clue that a rule is in play, not that the child is careless. Comprehension usually runs ahead of production.
Theories compete, with limits. Nativist accounts (Chomsky’s language acquisition device as a theory, not a photographed organ) argue that humans arrive prepared to extract grammar. That is still a theory. Learning accounts emphasize imitation and reinforcement; they struggle with overregularization and with how quickly grammar arrives. Interactionist accounts keep both: a prepared system plus a social world of child-directed talk. Statistical learning: infants can pick up patterns in sound streams. Limit: pattern detection in a lab stream is not a full grammar, and it is not a household.
A critical-period idea says early life is especially open for a first language. If a classroom mentions the historical ‘Genie’ case, treat it as a severely limited case study of extreme deprivation. Nutrition, attachment, harm, and language input were not separable. It is not a designed experiment. Do not sensationalize it. A methods stem about talk hours and vocabulary is usually an association with a causal limit, not a destiny score for a household.

Phoneme
The smallest sound unit that can change a word’s meaning.

Morpheme
The smallest unit that carries meaning, including prefixes, suffixes, and whole short words.
Confusable. Not a phoneme, and not the same as syntax (order).
Syntax
The rules for combining words into allowed sentences.
Confusable. Semantics is meaning; a sentence can be grammatical and still be nonsense.
Semantics
Meaning — what words and sentences refer to.
Confusable. Not pragmatics, which is how language is used in a social situation.
Pragmatics
Social use of language: turn-taking, tone, adjusting to the listener, what is left unsaid.
Confusable. Not vocabulary size, and not syntax.
Overregularization
Applying a grammatical rule too widely (goed, tooths) — a sign a rule is in play.
Confusable. Not proof the child has ‘no grammar,’ and not a phoneme error.
Language acquisition device (theory)
Chomsky’s nativist idea of a built-in preparedness to extract grammar; a theory, not a photographed organ.

Statistical learning
Picking up patterns in input (such as sound streams) from regularities, without a lecture.

- What was done
- Infants hear a nonsense stream in which some three-syllable chunks always hang together. Later, looking time is compared for familiar chunks vs new ones.
- Finding
- If infants look differently to the familiar chunks, a fair claim is that they picked up a statistical pattern in this stream — not that grammar is finished, and not that a parent ‘taught syllables.’
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Labeled hypothetical. A lab stream is not a household. Looking time is an operational definition, not a vocabulary test. Do not invent a journal or a percentage of infants.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: experiment / controlled exposure if the stream types are arranged by the researcher. Variable: familiar vs novel chunks; looking time as DV. Limit: statistical learning ≠ full syntax.

- Researchers record adult–child talk in a sample of homes for a set number of hours and later give a standardized vocabulary checklist.
- Finding
- If more child-directed talk goes with larger checklists, a fair claim is an association in this sample — not automatic proof that talk hours caused the vocabulary in every child, and not a ranking of cultures.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Labeled hypothetical. Homes that talk more may also differ in books, sleep, school, and stress. No random assignment to a household. Do not invent a national statistic.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: correlational / observational with a later checklist. Variables: recorded talk as operationalized; vocabulary score. Limit: association, not cause. Ethic: consent and privacy in a home recording.
Someone’s Tuesday
If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.
A two-word line on a bus — ‘more juice’ — is syntax starting, semantics clear, pragmatics aimed at a caregiver. A classmate who says ‘runned’ is overregularizing, not failing language. A family that speaks two languages at home is not a neuromyth; input in both can feed the same rule-learning system. A social post that says ‘left-brained people are better at grammar so they are organized’ has left this topic and entered a personality cartoon.
Where clever students go wrong
The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.
Left-brain language therefore personality is false for this course. ‘Genie proves X’ as a designed experiment is an overclaim; if mentioned, it is a severely limited historical case that cannot isolate variables. Overregularization is not carelessness. A talk-hours correlation is not a destiny score for a household. Do not invent how many children ‘miss a critical period.’

A child says ‘the cats runned.’ A parent answers as if the child meant that two animals moved in the past. Which units are in play, and which theory is helped by the error?
Walkthrough
Cats has two morphemes (cat + plural). Runned is overregularization of a past-tense rule (a morpheme applied too widely), not a phoneme swap. Syntax is a basic sentence; semantics is the event; pragmatics is directing it at the parent. Learning-only ‘they copy what they hear’ struggles, because adults do not say runned. A nativist or interactionist account can use the rule as evidence that grammar is being extracted, still with limits.
The move
Morphemes plus overregularization of a rule. Not a phoneme error. The mistake is evidence of a rule, which strains a copy-only learning story.
