Cognitive Development Across the Lifespan
Unit 3 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Cognitive-development items are won by keeping Piaget, Vygotsky, and information-processing separable — including their limits. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.
People change on a clock. Learning is not a personality; it is a consequence you can name.
Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.
A scene you already lived
Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.
A four-year-old pours juice from a short glass into a tall one and announces that there is now more. A twelve-year-old at the same table rolls their eyes, then still needs a hint to start a proof. An older relative pauses mid-sentence searching for a name that will arrive in a minute. Those are not three versions of ‘kids think differently.’ They are three tools: a stage-like limit on a conservation task, a zone where the right help lifts a performance, and a processing system whose speed and working memory change across a life. Keep the tools separable. The exam will.
What the paper actually asks
These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.
- Keep Piaget, Vygotsky, and information-processing as separable tools, with limits.
- Apply a stage or a zone of proximal development to a novel child/teen scene.
- Name what a conservation or scaffolding stem is actually testing.
The mechanism
Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.
Three tools. Do not mash them into one blob called ‘kids think differently.’
Piaget treats cognitive development as the child’s active building of schemes. Assimilation: fit a new thing into an existing scheme. Accommodation: change the scheme because the new thing will not fit. Sensorimotor (roughly infancy): thinking is action; object permanence is the exam-favorite milestone — the hidden toy is still there. Preoperational (early childhood): symbols and language arrive; egocentrism (difficulty taking another’s visual or conceptual view) and conservation failures (quantity looks changed when appearance changes) are the classic probes. Concrete operational: conservation and class logic on real objects. Formal operational: hypothetical and abstract if–then. Limits: the ages are typical, not laws; culture and schooling shift performance; a child may have the competence and still fail a clumsily worded task (competence vs performance). Piaget mapped a sequence of kinds of thinking. He did not finish the field.
Vygotsky puts the social world in the mechanism. The zone of proximal development (ZPD) is the band of tasks a child cannot yet do alone but can do with a more skilled partner. Scaffolding is the temporary help that sits inside that zone and is then faded. Language is a tool for thought, not only a label on a picture. A conservation fail and a successful scaffolded puzzle can both be true in the same afternoon. That is why the tools stay separable.
Information-processing is not a stage ladder. It asks about speed, attention, working-memory capacity, and strategies — and how those change across a life. Childhood: more speed, better strategies, a larger workspace. Later life: some slowing and some working-memory strain are common research findings; knowledge and expertise can still support performance. A decline on a speeded lab task is not a verdict on a person, and it is not Piaget’s formal-operational stage running in reverse.

Words worth owning
A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.
Assimilation
Fitting new information into an existing scheme without changing the scheme’s core.
Confusable. Accommodation is changing the scheme because the new information will not fit.
Accommodation
Changing a scheme so that new information can be handled.
Confusable. Not the same as just noticing something new. The structure of the scheme moves.
Object permanence
Understanding that an object continues to exist when it is out of sight — a sensorimotor milestone in Piaget’s map.
Confusable. Not conservation (quantity despite appearance change), and not a personality trait.
Conservation
Understanding that quantity stays the same when appearance changes (liquid, number, mass) — a concrete-operational success, a preoperational failure on classic tasks.
Confusable. Failing the task is not a diagnosis. Wording and materials can hide competence.
Egocentrism (Piaget)
Difficulty taking another person’s visual or conceptual viewpoint — a preoperational pattern on classic tasks.
Confusable. Not selfishness as a moral, and not Vygotsky’s ZPD.
Zone of proximal development
The band of tasks a learner cannot yet do alone but can do with a more skilled partner.
Confusable. Not a Piagetian stage, and not help that is so far above the learner that it does no work.
Scaffolding
Temporary, adjustable help inside the ZPD that is faded as the learner can take more of the task.
Confusable. Not doing the whole task for them, and not a conservation probe.
Working memory (information-processing)
The limited workspace for holding and manipulating information; capacity and speed are a lifespan research target.
Confusable. Not a Piagetian stage label, and not ‘memory’ as one blob.
A study you can actually use
Classic or labeled hypothetical. Either way: what was done, what was found, what it cannot claim.

- What was done
- A child sees equal liquid in two identical glasses. The liquid from one glass is poured into a taller, thinner glass. The child is asked whether the amounts are still the same.
- Finding
- Younger children on the classic task often say the taller glass has more — a conservation failure used to illustrate preoperational limits on this task. Older children more often judge the amounts equal.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Ages are typical, not laws. Culture, schooling, and how the question is asked can shift performance. A fail can be competence or a performance problem. The task is not a diagnosis of a child.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: structured cognitive task / demonstration, often with age-group comparison. Variable: age band and judgment of equality as operationalized. Limit: competence vs performance; not an experiment that assigned a stage.

- What was done
- Researchers give 12-year-olds a proof they cannot finish alone. Half are randomly assigned to a faded-hint script (a more skilled partner’s questions, then silence). Half sit with the same time and no hints. Finish-without-help on a new but related item is the outcome.
- Finding
- If the hint group later finishes more transfer items alone, a fair claim is that help inside a zone lifted later independent performance — not that Piaget’s stages are false, and not that the no-hint group ‘lacks intelligence.’
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Labeled hypothetical. One proof is not the mind. Hints must actually sit in a ZPD (too hard or too easy and the test fails). Do not invent a journal.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: experiment (random assignment to scaffolding script vs none). IV: hint condition. DV: independent transfer finishes. Application: Vygotsky’s scaffolding/ZPD, kept distinct from a conservation story.
Someone’s Tuesday
If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.
A younger sibling fails the juice-glass trick and, ten minutes later, builds a block tower with a grandparent who holds one block steady and then lets go. Piaget names the glass. Vygotsky names the tower. An older relative who knows every family story but loses a name in a noisy room is not ‘going backwards through stages’; an information-processing account would start with speed, noise, and working-memory load. Same household. Three tools.
Where clever students go wrong
The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.
‘Kids are egocentric’ as an insult is not Piaget’s task. Stage ages printed as destiny are a misuse. A parent who ‘scaffolds’ by grabbing the puzzle and finishing it is not in the ZPD. Later-life slowing on a lab timer is not a joke and not a full theory of a person. Do not mash the three tools because they all mention children.

The glass is a conservation failure — Piaget, preoperational pattern on this task, with the usual age/culture/performance limits. The tutor is scaffolding inside a ZPD — Vygotsky. They can both be true. An information-processing add-on would mention her workspace and the tutor reducing load; it still would not replace the two names.

What the conservation stem is actually testing
Say the move in your own mouth. If you can write it, you own it — rereading is not the same thing.
Original practice source, not a published paper. Children aged 5 and 9 see equal juice poured from a short glass into a tall one and say whether the amounts are still equal. Identify the method as used. Then name the Piagetian idea the task is probing, plus one limit on treating the ages as a law.
