Themes and Methods in Developmental Psychology

Unit 3 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Design items are won by naming what a method can claim — not by a vibe about ‘how kids grow.’ · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.

People change on a clock. Learning is not a personality; it is a consequence you can name.

Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.

A scene you already lived

Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.

Two photos sit on the kitchen table. In one, your uncle is sixteen, hair in a cut nobody wears now, standing beside a radio the size of a backpack. In the other, you are sixteen, same kitchen tiles, a phone in your hand. A visiting cousin asks whether sixteen-year-olds have always been like this, or whether the year you were born is doing some of the work. Developmental psychology does not answer with a vibe. It answers with a design: who was measured, when, and whether age is mixed with a generation. This page is the kit of those designs — and the three lenses that tell you what question you are even asking.

What the paper actually asks

These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.

  • Name the design: cross-sectional, longitudinal, or sequential — and its tradeoff.
  • Apply nature/nurture, continuity/discontinuity, and stability/change as lenses.
  • Spot a cohort effect in a methods stem.

The mechanism

Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.

Developmental psychology studies how people change and stay the same across a life. Before you name a finding, name the design that produced it.

Cross-sectional: different age groups measured at one time. Fast. You can compare a 10-year-old group with a 16-year-old group this month. What you cannot automatically claim is that the 10-year-olds will look like the 16-year-olds in six years. They were born into different years — different tech, school rules, news. That extra difference is a cohort effect: generation sitting on age.

Longitudinal: the same people, measured across time. Now you can watch stability and change inside a person. Tradeoffs: it is slow, expensive, and people drop out (attrition). The ones who stay may not represent the ones who left. Practice effects can also inflate later scores if the test is the same instrument again and again.

Sequential (sometimes called cross-sequential): more than one cohort, followed over time. It is an attempt to unhook age from cohort. It is not magic. It still has dropout, still has a sample, still cannot turn a life into a true experiment on aging — you cannot randomly assign someone to be seventy.

Three lenses, not three personality types. Nature/nurture: how much a pattern is explained by biological inheritance, by experience, or by their interaction — a design question, not a slogan. Continuity/discontinuity: is change gradual (more of the same skill) or stage-like (a qualitatively different kind of thinking)? Stability/change: does a quality or a rank-order persist, or does it move? Longitudinal designs serve stability/change questions better than a one-shot cross-section. The exam move is matching the lens and the design to what the stem actually asked — and naming what that design still cannot claim.

Words worth owning

A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.

Cross-sectional design

Different age groups measured at one time so researchers can compare age groups quickly.

Confusable. Not longitudinal. You do not follow the same people. Age is mixed with cohort.

Longitudinal design

The same people measured across time so change and stability can be tracked inside a person.

Confusable. Not a true experiment on aging. You still cannot randomly assign age. Watch attrition.

Sequential design

More than one cohort followed over time, combining cross-sectional and longitudinal features.

Confusable. Not a guarantee that cohort effects vanish. It is an attempt to unhook age from generation.

Cohort effect

A difference that comes from the generation or historical period people were born into, not from age alone.

Confusable. Not the same as a practice effect (getting better because you took the test before).

Nature/nurture (lens)

A question about how biological inheritance, experience, and their interaction explain a pattern in a sample.

Confusable. Not a personality type and not a slogan that one side ‘won.’

Continuity/discontinuity (lens)

A question about whether change is gradual (more of the same) or stage-like (a new kind of functioning).

Confusable. Not the same as stability/change, which asks whether a quality persists, not whether it is stage-like.

Stability/change (lens)

A question about whether a quality or rank-order persists across time in the same people.

Confusable. Best served by following people. A one-time age comparison cannot finish this question.

A study you can actually use

Classic or labeled hypothetical. Either way: what was done, what was found, what it cannot claim.

What was done
A team tests 10-, 14-, and 18-year-olds on the same puzzle task in one month and compares mean scores.
Finding
If older groups score higher, a fair claim is that age groups differed on this task this month — not that aging itself caused the gap, and not that the 10-year-olds will match today’s 18-year-olds in eight years.
Limit — what it cannot claim
Labeled hypothetical. Cross-sectional speed is the point; cohort is the bound. Do not invent a journal name.
How AAQ would probe it
Method: cross-sectional comparison (not an experiment that assigned age). Variable: age group and puzzle score as operationalized. Limit: cohort effects; no random assignment to being 18.

What was done
Researchers recruit a 2018 school-entry cohort and a 2022 school-entry cohort and test both every two years on the same working-memory span task.
Finding
If both cohorts gain with age, but the later cohort starts higher, a reasonable claim is that age-related gain and a generation difference may both be in the data — sequential design’s job is to make that split visible, not to erase every confound.
Limit — what it cannot claim
Labeled hypothetical. Dropout can still bias who remains. Two schools are not the species. Numbers inside this scene are practice numbers, not a paper.
How AAQ would probe it
Method: sequential (two cohorts, repeated measures). Variable: year of testing / cohort membership vs span score. Generalizability: these schools, these years. Ethic: assent plus caregiver consent for minors, and the right to stop.

Someone’s Tuesday

If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.

A news clip says ‘teenagers today cannot focus.’ The clip shows a 16-year-old with a phone, cut against a 1990s classroom film. That is a cross-sectional vibe with a cohort sitting on it: different tools, different school rules, different film-makers. A better question is longitudinal: the same people at 12 and 16, same operational definition of ‘focus,’ dropout named. A boarding-school hallway in one country and a city bus in another can hold the same methods problem — age mixed with the year you were born.

Where clever students go wrong

The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.

‘Kids these days’ is usually a cohort story wearing an age mask. A parenting blog that says a trait is ‘all genes’ or ‘all screens’ is skipping the interaction lens. Sequential is not a magic word that deletes every confound. Also watch the fake-longitudinal post that follows one influencer for a month and calls it development.

Scenario

A researcher wants to know whether shyness rank-order stays from 12 to 18 in the same students, and also whether students born in 2008 differ from students born in 2014 at the same ages. Which design best fits, and what still cannot be claimed?

Walkthrough

Stability/change inside people wants repeated measures on the same students (longitudinal). Comparing two birth years at the same ages wants more than one cohort. That combination is sequential. It still cannot randomly assign birth year, still loses people, and still cannot turn ‘shyness’ into a moral.

The move

Sequential: two cohorts followed across those ages. Claim: patterns of stability and cohort difference as measured. Not a true experiment on becoming 18.

Original practice source, not a published paper. A team tests 11-year-olds and 17-year-olds on the same attention task in one week. Mean hits: 11-year-olds = 14, 17-year-olds = 22. Identify the research design as used here. Then state one limit on what the 14 vs 22 comparison can claim.

Move: AAQ-style: name THIS design (cross-sectional). Then the limit: age is mixed with cohort; the numbers are a group comparison this week, not proof of what aging will do to the younger group.
