Forgetting and Other Memory Challenges

Unit 2 is 15–25% of MCQ. Forgetting items punish the ‘memory is a video file’ story. Name the mechanism that actually fits the scene. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.

You do not remember what happened. You remember what you encoded — and what later got in the way.

Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.

A scene you already lived

Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.

The term was perfect in the notes at 11:40 p.m. At 8:10 a.m. it is a hole with a shape. You can almost see the first letter. That is not a character flaw and it is not proof you ‘have a bad memory.’ Forgetting is a set of mechanisms: the trace was never well encoded, it decayed, the cue is wrong, or last night’s similar terms are sitting on the name you need. The exam asks which of those is happening — not whether you are lazy.

What the paper actually asks

These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.

  • Name the forgetting mechanism that fits: encoding failure, storage decay, or retrieval failure.
  • Tell proactive from retroactive interference, and treat memory as constructed — misinformation is distortion, not a deleted file.
  • Recognition is not proof of recall. Repression is contested; do not teach it as settled science.

The mechanism

Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.

Forgetting is not one leak. Encoding failure: the details never got in — you looked at the page and did not process the term. Storage decay: unused traces fade; Ebbinghaus’s curve is the historical picture of that fade, with limits. Retrieval failure: the trace is there but the cue is wrong — encoding specificity says cues that match the original context help.

Interference is a collision. Proactive interference: old learning blocks new (last year’s formula sitting on this year’s). Retroactive interference: new learning blocks old (tonight’s similar terms sitting on yesterday’s). Direction matters. The exam will give you a scene and ask which way the collision runs.

Memory is also constructed. We fill gaps. The misinformation effect: later wording can reshape what we later report. Source amnesia / source monitoring failure: you remember the content and lose where it came from — a friend, a reel, a textbook. None of that is a video recording that was ‘deleted.’

Repression — the idea that the mind buries a memory as defense — is a contested psychodynamic claim. On this page it is labeled as controversy, not as a fact you retrieve for marks. If a stem wants a research-based forgetting mechanism, pick encoding, decay, interference, cue failure, or construction.

Words worth owning

A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.

Proactive interference

Older learning disrupts recall of newer learning.

Confusable. Retroactive runs the other way: new learning disrupts old.

Retroactive interference

Newer learning disrupts recall of older learning.

Confusable. Not ‘retro’ as in vintage style. New material acting backward on old.

Encoding specificity

Retrieval is stronger when cues at test match the cues present at encoding.

Confusable. Not the same as ‘study longer.’ Matching context is the move.

Misinformation effect

Post-event information can distort later memory reports of the original event.

Confusable. Not proof that the original event never happened, and not a lie detector.

Source amnesia / source monitoring

Remembering information while losing (or misattributing) where it came from.

Confusable. Not the same as forgetting the information itself.

Repression (contested)

A psychodynamic idea that threatening memories are pushed out of awareness. Evidence is disputed; do not treat it as settled science.

Confusable. Not a synonym for ordinary forgetting, interference, or choosing not to talk about something.

Ebbinghaus forgetting curve

What was done
Hermann Ebbinghaus learned lists of nonsense syllables and tested himself after delays, plotting how much he could relearn or recall.
Finding
Forgetting was rapid at first and then slowed — a curve, not a cliff, and not a moral story.
Limit — what it cannot claim
He was his own subject. The materials were nonsense syllables, not a biology term you care about. The curve is a historical demonstration of decay/savings, not a law for every teenager’s exam week.
How AAQ would probe it
Method: a case of systematic self-experiment / early experimental memory work. Limit on generalizability: one man, nonsense material. Statistic: a drop in retention over delay — describe the direction, do not fake a number.

What was done
A teacher randomly assigns half of a class to review 12 history terms in a quiet room and half to review the same terms with a sitcom playing. Next morning both groups write the terms from memory.
Finding
If the quiet group recalls more, a fair claim is that the extra similar speech competed at encoding or retrieval — not that ‘multitasking is impossible for all humans in all tasks.’
Limit — what it cannot claim
Labeled hypothetical. One class is not the species. The sitcom is not a well-specified IV unless the teacher operationalizes volume and whether students could look up.
How AAQ would probe it
Method: experiment if random assignment happened. Variable: noise condition. Generalizability: this class, this test. Argumentation: encoding quality or interference, named.

Someone’s Tuesday

If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.

You speak two languages at home, or you run two sports with similar plays, or you are in math and physics in the same week. Yesterday’s formula and today’s sit in the same phonological neighborhood. You retrieve the wrong one with total confidence. That can be retroactive interference if today’s work is sitting on yesterday’s, or proactive if last year’s course is still driving. A second lived case: you ‘recognize’ a term on a multiple-choice page and cannot produce it on a blank line. Recognition is not recall. The exam will use both.

Where clever students go wrong

The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.

‘I have a photographic memory’ is almost always a story, not a mechanism. Memory is not a video recording; construction and cue-dependence are the rule. Also watch the social-media move that treats every forgotten name as trauma-repression. Ordinary interference and encoding failure explain most school forgetting. If a stem wants a research-based account, do not reach for repression.

Walkthrough

New similar verbal material came after the psychology list and is now blocking it. That is retroactive interference — new hurting old — not proactive (old hurting new), not encoding failure (she knew them last night), and not a photographic-memory fail. Cue-dependence could play a role if the morning test context differs, but the stem highlights interpolated similar material.

EBQ Part C practice. Evidence (paraphrased): when people learn List B after List A, recall of List A drops more than for people who rest instead of learning List B. In your own words, apply retroactive interference to explain that pattern. Name the concept. Tie it to the evidence.
