Retrieving Memories

Unit 2 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Retrieval items punish the story that recognizing a term means you know it, and they punish over-reading a serial-position graph as a moral. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.

You do not remember what happened. You remember what you encoded — and what later got in the way.

Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.

A scene you already lived

Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.

The name is in your mouth and then it is not. You stop hunting. In the stairwell it arrives, attached to a laugh you were not trying to remember. Or: the definitions felt easy on the bedroom floor, whispered to a poster, and died in the hall where the poster is missing. Retrieval is not a printer. It is a search with cues. A test that lets you recognize a term is not the same as a test that makes you produce it. First and last items on a list often come back more than the middle — a pattern with a graph, not a verdict on laziness.

What the paper actually asks

These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.

  • Apply cues, priming, serial position, and encoding specificity to a scene.
  • Recall is not recognition; context and state can help or hurt.
  • Read a retrieval graph (primacy/recency) without overclaiming.

The mechanism

Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.

Retrieval uses cues. A cue is any hint that can unlock a trace — a doorway, a smell, the first letter, a practice question written in the same shape as the test. Priming: a recent stimulus makes a related response easier without you necessarily reporting the link. Encoding specificity: retrieval is stronger when cues at test match cues that were present at encoding. Context-dependent memory is the place version (study in the hall, test in the hall). State-dependent memory is the internal-state version (a matching bodily or mood state). Both are encoding-specificity cousins. They can help or hurt; mismatch is not a character flaw.

Recall is not recognition. Producing the name is a different test from circling it. People fail the blank and pass the four-option page with the same trace in different cue conditions. Do not treat a recognition hit as proof of knowledge you could generate.

Serial position: on an immediate recall of a list, early items are often stronger (primacy — more rehearsal toward long-term) and late items are often stronger (recency — still in a short-term / working hold). The middle sags. Delay or a filled pause can knock down recency more than primacy. Read a position graph as a pattern of retrieval, not as ‘they did not care about the middle.’ Do not overclaim a cause the table did not measure.

Words worth owning

A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.

Retrieval cue

Any hint — external or internal — that can help locate a stored trace.

Confusable. Not the same as encoding (getting it in). A missing cue can hide a trace that was stored.

Priming

A recent stimulus increases the accessibility of a related response, often without a deliberate search.

Confusable. Not a full recall of an episode. Not perceptual set (2.1), though both involve readiness.

Encoding specificity

Retrieval is stronger when cues at test match the cues present at encoding.

Confusable. Not ‘study longer.’ Matching beats extra unmatched minutes. 2.7 uses this idea for cue-dependent forgetting.

Context-dependent memory

Place and external setting can serve as cues; matching rooms can help, mismatch can hurt.

Confusable. State-dependent is internal state (including mood-congruent versions), not the furniture.

Matching internal state at encoding and test can support retrieval.

Confusable. Not a license to sit a paper unwell because you studied unwell. It is a cue-match idea with limits.

Primacy effect

Better recall of early list items, often tied to more rehearsal into a longer-term hold.

Confusable. Recency is the end of the list (short-term / working hold on immediate tests), not the beginning.

Recency effect

Better recall of late list items on an immediate test, often still in short-term / working memory.

Confusable. A delay or distractor before recall can reduce recency while leaving primacy more intact.

Recall vs recognition (at retrieval)

Recall produces the item; recognition identifies it. A recognition hit is not proof of recall.

Confusable. Not two stores. Two tests. 2.3 introduced the split; this page applies it as a retrieval fact.

Classic or labeled hypothetical. Either way: what was done, what was found, what it cannot claim.

Classroom-common account: divers learned words on land or underwater and were tested in a matching or mismatching environment.
Finding
Matching study-and-test environment supported recall relative to mismatch — a demonstration of encoding specificity / context-dependent retrieval, not a command to sit every paper in your bedroom.
Limit — what it cannot claim
Divers, word lists, two striking environments. A quiet exam hall vs a bedroom is a cousin, not a copy. Do not invent a percentage. One classic is not every context effect in every sense.
How AAQ would probe it
Method: experiment (environment at learning and at test). Application: encoding specificity. Limit: generalizability from divers and lists. Statistic: describe a matching advantage if numbers are given; do not fake them.

What was done
A class hears 12 ordinary market words once, then immediately writes as many as they can. Mean percent recalled by position: 1–2 = 81%; 3–4 = 54%; 5–6 = 33%; 7–8 = 29%; 9–10 = 48%; 11–12 = 76%.
Finding
Ends are stronger than the middle on this immediate test — a primacy and recency pattern. A fair sentence names the shape. It does not say the middle words were repressed, never presented, or skipped because students are lazy.
Limit — what it cannot claim
Labeled hypothetical. One class, one list, immediate written recall. Numbers exist only in this practice card. No delay condition here, so you cannot claim what a filled pause would do unless the stem adds it. Do not cite as a real paper.
How AAQ would probe it
Practice 3: read position vs percent. Statistic: high at the ends, dip in the middle — direction and shape. Argumentation: serial position (primacy and recency). Cannot claim motivation or repression from the table.

Someone’s Tuesday

If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.

A name arrives when you stop forcing it: a better cue wandered in (a laugh, a place), not a personality reboot. Definitions that were easy on the bedroom floor die in the hall: context mismatch, encoding specificity. A friend says ‘mango’ and suddenly the shopping list’s next item is easier: priming. You circle the term on four options and cannot produce it on a blank: recognition is not recall. A teacher reads a list of 12; you remember the opening examples and the last joke, not item 7. That is a serial-position pattern, not a confession.

Where clever students go wrong

The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.

‘If I recognized it I know it’ — no. Recognition is a different, often easier, test. Serial-position graphs are not moral reports. Recency is not ‘caring more about the end.’ Context-dependent memory is not an excuse to refuse every unfamiliar hall; it is a cue-match idea. Priming is not subliminal mind control from a film. Do not drag in repression (contested, 2.7) to explain a middle dip.

Aisha studies definitions aloud in her kitchen. The mock exam is silent in the gym. She recognizes almost every term on multiple choice and cannot produce three of them on blanks. A 12-word warm-up list shows strong first and last items. What retrieval ideas carry this, and what does the list pattern allow?

Walkthrough

Kitchen vs gym is context mismatch (encoding specificity). Multiple choice vs blank is recognition vs recall — she did not ‘know’ in the produce-it sense just because she circled. The 12-word pattern is primacy plus recency on an immediate list. It does not allow a claim about repression or about the gym causing the list shape (the list was a warm-up, not the exam). Do not diagnose Aisha.

Read the serial-position display

Say the move in your own mouth. If you can write it, you own it — rereading is not the same thing.
