Perception
Unit 2 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Perception items are lost when students treat them as 1.6 Sensation. Organization and interpretation are the jobs here. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.
You do not remember what happened. You remember what you encoded — and what later got in the way.
Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.
A scene you already lived
Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.
The bus-stop sign is missing a letter. You still read the word. You did not grow extra cones. Light already became a neural message in the eye — that was sensation, Unit 1.6, one border sentence and then we leave it. What happens next is organization: your brain groups the strokes, fills the gap, and hands you a word you already know. A face in a rain cloud is the same job. Not hearing your name in a noisy hall until the syllables are yours is the same job running on sound. A camera records intensities. It does not close a broken letter or pick a figure out of a ground. The exam will punish calling transduction perception.
What the paper actually asks
These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.
- Treat perception as organization and interpretation of already-transduced input.
- Apply top-down vs bottom-up, gestalt grouping, and constancy to a novel scene.
- Do not collapse this page into 1.6 Sensation.
The mechanism
Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.
Perception is what the nervous system does with input that is already a signal. Bottom-up processing builds from the features in that signal — edges, frequencies, the actual strokes on the sign. Top-down processing uses knowledge, expectation, and context to organize those features — which is why STOPN still reads as STOP, and why a lyric is clearer once you know the title. Both run. An item that only mentions receptors is in the wrong unit.
Gestalt grouping is a classroom kit for how bits become objects: proximity (near things clump), similarity (alike things clump), continuity (we follow a smooth line), closure (we fill a gap), figure–ground (one region becomes the object, the rest recedes). These are organization rules, not extra light in the eye.
Depth is inferred. Binocular cues need two eyes: retinal disparity (each eye’s slightly different image) and convergence (the inward turn for near objects). Monocular cues work with one eye — relative size, interposition, linear perspective, relative height, texture gradient, relative motion, light and shadow. At AP grain, name the family that fits the scene; do not invent a third eye.
Perceptual constancy keeps an object’s identity across changing input: a door still looks rectangular from the side (shape), a friend does not shrink at the far end of the corridor (size), a white shirt stays white in yellow streetlight (color), within limits. Perceptual set is the ready expectation that tilts interpretation — hungry, you see food in a cloud; waiting for your name, you hear it in the scrape of a chair.

Words worth owning
A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.
Bottom-up processing
Organization that starts from features in the already-transduced signal — edges, frequencies, the strokes that are actually there.
Confusable. Not sensation itself. Sensation is the transduction step in 1.6. Bottom-up is a perceptual direction of travel.
Top-down processing
Organization that uses knowledge, context, and expectation to interpret the signal — filling a missing letter, hearing a lyric you know.
Confusable. Not ‘imagination’ as a personality. Not extra transduction in the receptor.
Gestalt grouping
Organization rules by which bits are perceived as wholes: proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, figure–ground.
Confusable. Not a proof that cameras group. Not a social ‘group’ in Unit 4.
Figure–ground
One region is perceived as the object (figure); the rest recedes as background (ground).
Confusable. Not the same as closure (filling a gap in a line or shape).
Binocular depth cues
Depth information that requires two eyes, especially retinal disparity and convergence.
Confusable. Monocular cues (relative size, linear perspective, interposition, and the rest) work with one eye.
Monocular depth cues
Depth information available with one eye: relative size, interposition, linear perspective, relative height, texture, motion, light and shadow.
Confusable. Not ‘weaker binocular.’ Different recipe, not a failed two-eye system.
Perceptual constancy
Perceiving an object as stable in shape, size, or color despite changing retinal input.
Confusable. Not sensory adaptation (1.6: receptors firing less). Constancy is an interpretation that holds identity.
Perceptual set
A ready expectation or context that tilts how ambiguous input is organized.
Confusable. Not a mental set in problem-solving (2.2: a stuck strategy). Neighboring word, different job.

Classic or labeled hypothetical. Either way: what was done, what was found, what it cannot claim.

Gestalt grouping demonstrations
- What was done
- Classroom-common displays — clusters of dots, broken circles, overlapping lines — are used to show that people report wholes (rows, a complete circle, a continuous path) rather than isolated bits.
- Finding
- Organization follows named grouping rules (proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, figure–ground). The report is not a photocopy of the ink.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- A demonstration that people group is not a complete theory of every culture’s art, and it is not a claim about extra light in the eye. Classroom cards are not a journal article; do not invent a percentage of ‘correct groupings.’
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: demonstration / structured observation of reports, not a drug trial. Variable: the arrangement of elements. Application: name the grouping rule that fits. Limit: a classroom card does not measure transduction.

- What was done
- A teacher randomly assigns half a class to see the caption ‘musical instrument’ and half to see ‘kitchen tool’ above the same ambiguous line drawing, then asks each student to name the object in one word.
- Finding
- If the two caption groups name different objects, a fair claim is that a verbal set tilted interpretation of the same lines — not that the drawing changed, and not that anyone’s eyes grew new receptors.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Labeled hypothetical. One class, one drawing, one-word answers. Caption is the IV only if assignment was random and the drawing was identical. Do not cite this as a real paper.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: experiment if random assignment happened. IV: caption. DV: the name given. Argumentation: top-down / perceptual set — not a 1.6 threshold study.
Someone’s Tuesday
If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.
Night-market neon with a dead bulb still reads as a shop name. A football on a rain-blurred pitch is still a ball, not a shrinking object (size constancy) even as the retinal image changes. In a crowded assembly you miss three names and lock onto your own — the sound was already transduced; set and organization caught up. Cover one eye on a bus ride and linear perspective, relative size, and motion still give you depth; disparity is gone. The skill is naming the organization move, then refusing to call it a receptor event.
Where clever students go wrong
The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.
‘The camera sees like we do’ is false for this page: a camera stores intensities; it does not close a letter or hold a door rectangular. Treating transduction as perception collapses 2.1 into 1.6 and loses the item. Absolute threshold, difference threshold, and sensory adaptation belong next door. Perceptual set is not a problem-solving mental set. Constancy is not ‘your eyes adjusting.’ If a post says a filter ‘hacks your optic nerve,’ ask whether the claim is about light becoming a signal or about how a signal is organized.

From the back of a dim hall, a rectangular banner looks trapezoid-shaped on the retina, but Devi still sees a rectangle with words she can read even though one letter is unlit. Which two perception ideas best carry the scene?
Walkthrough
The banner is still a rectangle: shape constancy, not a new kind of cone. The missing letter is filled from knowledge of the word: top-down organization / closure, not extra transduction. Bottom-up still supplies the remaining strokes. Do not reach for absolute threshold (1.6) or for a heuristic from 2.2 unless the stem asks for a judgment shortcut.

Original practice source, not a published paper. A teacher randomly assigns 30 students to view an identical ambiguous drawing under the caption ‘animal’ or ‘vehicle,’ then records the one-word name each student gives. Identify the research method. Then name the perception process the captions are meant to tilt, and state one claim the study cannot support about the eye.
Move: AAQ-style: method is experiment. Application is perceptual set / top-down. Limit: it cannot claim a change in transduction or receptors.
