Unit 1 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Sensation is a high-miss hard topic: the exam wants transduction at the sense organ, not a Unit 2 perception story and not a sixth sense. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.

Hard — this one trips people who only memorized the word
Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.

The boarding-house AC has been roaring since you sat down. Ten minutes later you cannot hear it unless you hunt for it. A classmate’s perfume did the same thing last period — loud at the door, gone by the second problem. At assembly the announcement was too quiet; half the hall never got the time change. None of those is a sixth sense and none of them is a personality. They are detection problems: a receptor converting physical energy into a neural code, a threshold, a difference you can or cannot notice, a fade when the stimulus sits still. Perception — organizing and interpreting that code — is the next unit. This page stays at the sense organ. That split is the hard move.
What the paper actually asks
These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.
- Keep transduction in the sense organ; perception is Unit 2 — do not blur them.
- Apply absolute threshold, difference threshold, and sensory adaptation to a scene.
- Name the physical stimulus and the receptor, not a vibe.
The mechanism
Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.
Sensation is detection plus transduction. Physical energy hits a receptor. The receptor converts that energy into a neural code. That conversion is transduction, and it lives at the sense organ. Perception is later organization and interpretation of already-transduced input. It is Unit 2. You can live both in one minute. The exam still wants the job that belongs here.
Thresholds are detection ideas, not vibes. Absolute threshold: the minimum stimulus intensity that is detected (classically, on about half of the trials). A too-quiet announcement is this neighborhood. Difference threshold (just-noticeable difference): the minimum change you can detect. Weber’s idea, without a fake table of fractions: the just-noticeable change tends to scale with the starting intensity — a pinch of cardamom vanishes in a strong cup and shows in a weak one. Sensory adaptation: receptors and their circuits respond less to a constant stimulus. The AC hum vanishes. The perfume fades. The stimulus did not leave the room. The detection dropped.
A short receptor map. Vision: light (photons) → photoreceptors (rods and cones) in the retina. Hearing: sound-wave vibration → hair cells in the cochlea. Smell: airborne molecules → olfactory receptors. Taste: chemicals in saliva → taste receptor cells. Touch: pressure, temperature, pain → various skin receptors. Name the physical stimulus and the receptor. Do not name a mood.
The hard extra: same receptor activity, two later stories. Photoreceptors fire from whiteboard light — sensation. You ‘see’ a full word behind a coffee stain because surrounding letters complete it — perception (Unit 2). Olfactory receptors fire from perfume — sensation. You later interpret ‘someone was in the room’ — not transduction, and not a sixth sense. Keep the conversion at the organ. Hand the meaning to the next unit.
Perception (Unit 2) is organization of that code. Do not blur the border.
Words worth owning
A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.
Sensation
Detection of physical energy by sensory receptors, including transduction into a neural code.
Confusable. Perception is organization and interpretation — Unit 2. Do not collapse the two.
Transduction
Conversion of physical energy (light, vibration, chemicals, pressure) into a neural code at the receptor.
Confusable. Not a hormone in the blood, and not the later meaning of the stimulus.
Absolute threshold
The minimum stimulus intensity that is detected, classically on about half of the trials.
Confusable. Not a personality of ‘good ears,’ and not the same as a just-noticeable change.
Difference threshold (JND)
The minimum change in a stimulus that is detected; Weber’s idea is that this change tends to scale with starting intensity.
Confusable. Not a table of invented fractions you must memorize, and not absolute threshold.
Sensory adaptation
Reduced responding to a constant stimulus at the receptor and its circuits.
Confusable. Not a sixth sense vanishing, and not absolute threshold going to infinity.
Photoreceptors
Rods and cones in the retina that transduce light into a neural code.
Confusable. Not hair cells (those transduce vibration in the ear), and not the later naming of a face.
Hair cells (hearing)
Receptors in the cochlea that transduce sound-wave vibration into a neural code.
Confusable. Not photoreceptors, and not ‘noticing what the siren means.’
Olfactory receptors
Receptors that transduce airborne chemical molecules into a neural code for smell.
Confusable. Interpreting ‘someone was here’ is not the transduction step.

- Researchers play tones of four intensities in a Dubai classroom and record the percent of trials on which students report hearing the tone. They treat the intensity detected on about 50% of trials as their operational definition of absolute threshold.
- Finding
- Detection rates rise with intensity, and one target intensity sits near the 50% point — a threshold-style pattern, not a personality of ‘good ears.’
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Labeled hypothetical. Self-report of ‘heard it’ is not the receptor itself. Classroom noise is a confound if not controlled. Do not invent a journal or a Weber fraction.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: experiment or structured psychophysical procedure if intensity is manipulated. Operational definition: lowest intensity detected on 50% of trials. Statistic: detection rises with intensity — direction. Limit: this room, this sample.

- A teacher sprays a constant scent at the classroom door. Students rate intensity at 1 minute and at 10 minutes, then later write whether they think someone new entered the room.
- Finding
- If intensity ratings drop at 10 minutes, adaptation at the chemical sense is a fair claim. The later ‘someone entered’ sentence is an interpretation — not a new transduction and not a sixth sense.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Labeled hypothetical. Ratings are not receptor voltages. Airflow can actually change concentration, which would not be pure adaptation. Do not cite this as a real paper.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Variable: rated intensity over time (adaptation) versus a later interpretive judgment (perception, Unit 2). Keep the jobs distinct. Operational definition: the rating scale at two time points.
Someone’s Tuesday
If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.
Boarding-house AC: roar, then vanish — adaptation. Assembly announcement too quiet for half the hall — absolute threshold. Cardamom in already-strong chai versus a weak cup — difference threshold as idea. Fire-drill siren: pressure wave → hair cells, then later the meaning ‘leave the building’ (perception, not this page’s conversion). Whiteboard light → photoreceptors; a coffee stain that still ‘reads’ as a full word is Unit 2 riding on that code. Name the stimulus and the receptor. Leave the meaning for 2.1.
Where clever students go wrong
The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.
‘I have a sixth sense’ is not an AP receptor. Confusing noticing meaning with transduction is the expensive blur — that meaning is perception. Adaptation is not proof the stimulus left the room. Threshold is not a personality. A reel that says your eyes ‘see with the mind only’ is skipping the organ this unit owns.

Operational definition of a threshold
Say the move in your own mouth. If you can write it, you own it — rereading is not the same thing.

Identify the research method if they manipulate intensity and record reports. Then state an operational definition of absolute threshold as this study could use it.
