Interaction of Heredity and Environment
Unit 1 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Heritability-as-destiny is a high-miss: the exam wants a population variance statistic, not a percent of you. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.

Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.
A scene you already lived
Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.
Same kitchen, same school van, same Saturday dosa. Arjun is already in the compound with a tennis ball at 6:10 a.m. His sister Meera will not be bribed onto the pitch. Nobody assigned them different parents. The easy story is destiny: he was born an athlete, she was not. The other easy story is parenting: someone praised him more. Both stories are too small. What you inherited is a set of possibilities. What the house, the coach, the sleep, and the hours did is turn some of those possibilities into a skill you can see. The exam name for that joint work is interaction. This page keeps nature, nurture, and interaction from collapsing into a slogan — and shows how to read a twin or adoption design for what it can actually claim.
What the paper actually asks
These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.

The mechanism
Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.
Nature is the genetic contribution. Nurture is the environmental contribution — house, language, coaching, sleep, nutrition, a school’s range of chances. Interaction is the exam’s third word: genes and environments jointly shape what you can observe. A sport skill that training changed is still using a body that arrived with a genotype. A temperament that diverged in the same apartment is not proof that the home did nothing, and not proof that DNA wrote a finished person.
Genotype is the genetic sequence a person inherited. Phenotype is the observable trait — height, a serve, a score on a shyness scale. Environment can move a phenotype (the serve gets cleaner) without turning the genotype into a software patch you rewrote in six weeks. Do not treat those two words as synonyms.
Heritability is not a destiny score. It is a statistic about variance in a trait, in a population, in a given range of environments: how much of the differences among those people relate to genetic differences. A number attached to shyness in one sample is not ‘40% of Maya is DNA.’ If the environment’s range changes, the statistic can change. You cannot read it off one family, and you cannot use it as a reason to stop practicing.
Designs are methods, not vibes. Twin comparisons: if identical twins resemble each other more than fraternal twins on a measured trait, a genetic contribution to variance is a fair claim — with limits (including how similar the homes actually were). Adoption designs: resemblance to birth relatives versus adoptive relatives helps untangle shared genes from shared house. Family studies show clustering; they do not, by themselves, cut the tangle. None of these randomly assigns DNA. Do not call them experiments that ‘proved destiny.’
Epigenetics at this grain: environment can influence gene expression — whether a sequence is more or less active — without the movie-plot claim that one exam week rewrote your genome as settled fact for the next generation. Evolution by natural selection is a species-level process across generations. A bad mock does not mean you ‘evolved to hate math.’ Practice is still an environmental input sitting on a phenotype.

Words worth owning
A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.
Genotype
The genetic sequence a person inherited — the DNA-level contribution, not the visible trait itself.
Confusable. Phenotype is what you can observe. They are not synonyms.
Phenotype
An observable trait — height, a skill, a score — produced by genotype, environment, and their interaction.
Confusable. Not ‘personality as destiny,’ and not a heritability coefficient for one student.
Heritability
A population statistic: the proportion of variance in a trait, in a group in a given range of environments, that relates to genetic differences.
Confusable. Not a personal destiny score, not ‘this percent of YOU is genetic,’ and not a reason practice cannot matter.
Nature–nurture interaction
Genes and environments jointly shape a phenotype; neither slogan is the whole mechanism.
Confusable. Not ‘nature versus nurture’ as a fight with one winner.
Twin study (as method)
A comparison of resemblance (often identical vs fraternal, sometimes raised apart) on a measured trait, used to bound genetic and environmental contributions to variance.
Confusable. Not an experiment that assigned genes last week, and not a destiny printer.
Adoption study (as method)
A design that compares resemblance to birth relatives versus adoptive relatives to help separate shared genes from shared home.
Confusable. Placement is not random assignment of DNA. One adopted child is not the field.
Epigenetics (AP grain)
Environmental influence on gene expression — whether a sequence is more or less active — without treating DNA as a locked vault or a one-night rewrite.
Confusable. Not ‘stress rewrote your genome and your children are doomed’ as settled exam science.
Natural selection
A species-level process across generations in which heritable traits that aid survival and reproduction become more common in a population.
Confusable. Not ‘you evolved to hate math this month,’ and not a personal origin story for one bad mock.
A study you can actually use
Classic or labeled hypothetical. Either way: what was done, what was found, what it cannot claim.

Twin and adoption designs (as methods)
- What was done
- Researchers compare resemblance: identical versus fraternal twins, twins raised in different homes, or adopted children versus birth and adoptive relatives, on a measured trait.
- Finding
- When genetically closer people resemble each other more, even across homes, a genetic contribution to variance in that population is a fair claim. When people who share a home resemble each other beyond genes, an environmental contribution is a fair claim.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- A classroom summary is not a named paper. Heritability is about variance in a group, not a percent of one person. How similar the homes actually were, the range of environments sampled, and non-random placement all bound the claim. Do not invent a percentage.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Identify the method (twin comparison or adoption design — not an experiment that assigned genes). Name a variable (the measured trait). Ask what the result can claim: contribution to variance — not destiny for a named student.

- What was done
- A coach offers the same six-week serve drill to both children in 20 families. A researcher records serves landing in a marked box at week 0 and week 6, and notes that some sibling pairs stay far apart while both improve.
- Finding
- If both children improve but the gap does not vanish, a fair claim is that training moved the phenotype and that something stable — which might include genetic difference, plus unmeasured home differences — still sat under the remaining gap. That is interaction language, not a gene name.
- Limit — what it cannot claim
- Labeled hypothetical. Twenty families are not the species. Siblings share genes and a house, so the leftover gap is not a clean heritability estimate. Do not cite this as a real paper.
- How AAQ would probe it
- Method: not a true experiment on genes (genes were not assigned). Variable: serve accuracy, operationalized as count in the box. What it can claim: training can change a phenotype; a leftover sibling gap is not a destiny score.
Someone’s Tuesday
If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.
A basketball gym in an international school, or cricket nets behind a Bengaluru apartment: two siblings, one drill, two different serves six weeks later. Language at home is the same idea in another room — a child hears two languages and a cousin in the same building hears one; the phenotype (fluency, accent, ease) is not ‘a language gene’ and not ‘parenting only.’ A third version: a student whose shooting got cleaner because a coach existed and because the body had something to train. Name nature, name nurture, name the joint. One family story is a scene. It is not a twin design.
Where clever students go wrong
The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.
Genetic destiny (‘it is in my DNA, so practice is pointless’) treats heritability as a personal percent. ‘It’s all parenting’ treats one house as a full design. A single sibling pair is not a method. Also watch the evolution slide: natural selection does not mean you evolved a hatred of a subject this term. If a social post names a gene, a percentage of you, or a fake twin paper, ask which claim the actual design can support.

Identical twins raised in different cities are more similar on a vocabulary test than unrelated classmates are. A journalist writes that vocabulary is ‘genetic destiny for each twin.’ What can the design support, and what does it not print?
Walkthrough
This is a twin-comparison style claim about resemblance, not an experiment that assigned DNA. Greater resemblance in identical twins than in unrelated peers can support a genetic contribution to variance in that sample. It does not print a destiny score for one twin, it does not erase the homes they actually lived in, and it is not ‘all parenting’ either. Heritability, if someone later computes it, still belongs to the group’s variance — not to a slice of Maya.
