Overview of the Nervous System

Unit 1 is 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. Autonomic items are high-miss when sympathetic/parasympathetic become ‘good vs bad’ or a reflex waits for an essay. · about 5 minutes with the essay beats.

Your body votes before the story does. Walk the path and the lobe-poetry stops working as a trick.

Read the scene first. The term will wait. When it lands, you will be able to use it on a stranger’s story — that is the exam, and that is also why this subject is interesting.

A scene you already lived

Do not hunt the term yet. Let this sit. The exam will hand you a stranger’s version of the same night.

A Dubai bus takes the corner tighter than it should. You are already on the curb. Heart kicks. Stomach drops. Hands find the backpack strap. Thirty seconds later you are walking, naming the bus number, annoyed at yourself for jumping. The jump was not a moral failing and it was not a personality type. It was a body system doing its job: a fast path through nerves, then a slower settle. This page is the map of those systems — which cables, which branches, which opposing regulators — not a poem about ‘having nerves,’ and not a left-brain story.

What the paper actually asks

These are the scoring targets. If you can do them on a new story, you are ready — flashcards can wait.

The mechanism

Once you can walk this, you will start seeing it at dinner, in a group chat, in your own delay. That is the fun of this course.

The central nervous system (CNS) is brain plus spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is the rest of the wiring — nerves in and out of the CNS. A burn on a chai glass, a piano key, a bus horn: sensory messages travel PNS inward; motor commands travel PNS outward; the cord and brain are CNS. Do not put the fingertips inside the skull on the exam.

Inside the PNS, two jobs. Somatic: mostly skeletal muscle you can move on purpose, plus sensory input from skin, joints, and muscles. Autonomic: glands, heart, gut, smooth muscle — the stuff that does not wait for a committee. Playing a practiced piece is largely somatic in the fingers. The stomach flutter before the recital is autonomic. Both can happen in the same minute.

Autonomic has two opposing regulators, not a hero and a villain. Sympathetic: spend energy — heart up, digestion down, pupils open, a body ready to move. Parasympathetic: conserve and settle — heart down, digestion back on. You need both. After the bus, sympathetic first, then parasympathetic as you walk it off. Neither is a moral grade.

A reflex arc can finish in the spinal cord: sensory in, a connection in the cord, motor out. The kick after a tendon tap is already happening as the joke forms. The brain can be informed. It does not have to write an essay first. Do not invent extra cortical steps the stem did not earn.

The endocrine system is a different postal service: glands release hormones into blood; the message is slower and often longer-lasting than a synaptic hop. After a near-miss, trembling that outlasts a single nerve spike is a hint that blood-borne chemistry is still in the story. Topic 1.3 owns the ion-by-ion neuron. Words worth owning

A definition is a tool. The confusable is the distractor. Learn both and the clever wrong answer stops working.

Central nervous system (CNS)

Brain and spinal cord — the midline cable and the processors on it.

Confusable. Not the nerves in the hand. Those are PNS.

Peripheral nervous system (PNS)

Nerves outside the brain and spinal cord that carry messages in and out.

Confusable. Not ‘peripheral’ as in unimportant. It is the wiring to the body.

Somatic nervous system

The PNS branch for skeletal-muscle movement and sensory input from skin, muscles, and joints.

Confusable. Not the gut/heart story. That is autonomic.

Autonomic nervous system

The PNS branch that regulates glands, heart, and smooth muscle — largely without a conscious plan.

Confusable. Not ‘automatic personality.’ It is a branch of nerves.

Sympathetic division

The autonomic regulator that mobilizes energy — heart up, digestion down — in a challenge or threat.

Confusable. Not ‘sympathy’ and not the good/bad label. It is not a villain.

Parasympathetic division

The autonomic regulator that conserves energy and settles the body — heart down, digestion on.

Confusable. Not ‘always good.’ You need it, and you also need sympathetic.

Reflex arc

A fast pathway, often spinal: sensory in, cord connection, motor out — without waiting for a finished conscious plan.

Confusable. Not proof the brain is unused, and not a hormone bypass.

Endocrine system

Glands that release hormones into the bloodstream — slower, often longer-lasting chemical messages than a synapse.

Confusable. Not the same postal system as a neurotransmitter hopping a cleft (that is 1.3).

A study you can actually use

Classic or labeled hypothetical. Either way: what was done, what was found, what it cannot claim.

What was done
A tap to a tendon sends a sensory message into the spinal cord; a motor message returns to the muscle; the leg kicks. A person can notice the kick as it happens or just after.
Finding
A coordinated movement can run at the cord without a full conscious plan being the first author. The brain may receive a copy; the arc does not wait for an essay.
Limit — what it cannot claim
A classroom tap is not a complete map of every startle. It does not license the 10%-of-the-brain myth, and it does not make ‘nerves’ a moral failing. Do not invent a millisecond figure.
How AAQ would probe it
Method: a physiological demonstration / simple within-person observation, not a personality survey. Variable: presence of the tap; outcome: the kick. Application: reflex arc, spinal, thought late.

Researchers randomly assign 36 students to a sudden horn or to a quiet control minute, then record heart rate at baseline, at 10 seconds, and at 2 minutes.
Finding
If the horn group rises then moves back toward baseline compared with quiet, a fair claim is that an autonomic startle-and-settle pattern showed up in this sample — not that the quiet group has better character.
Limit — what it cannot claim
Labeled hypothetical. Heart rate is not a full map of sympathetic and parasympathetic. One horn is not a life. Do not cite this as a real paper.
How AAQ would probe it
Method: experiment (random assignment to horn vs quiet). IV: the sound condition. DV: heart rate (bpm at set times). Ethics: startle needs consent and a right to skip; debrief if the horn was a surprise.

Someone’s Tuesday

If it only lives in the textbook, it will not survive a novel stem. This is the idea wearing ordinary clothes.

Near-miss on a scooter in Bengaluru traffic, or a school-bus lurch, or a name lighting up on a phone: shoulders jump, gut tightens, then the walk home or the next message settles it. A piano recital: somatic fingers on a well-learned piece, autonomic flutter in the stomach. A tendon tap in a clinic. A chai glass that is too hot — yank first, word later. Naming the branch is the skill. Calling the jump ‘being dramatic’ is not a mechanism.

Where clever students go wrong

The trap is usually a neighboring term that almost fits. Name it so it stops feeling smart.

‘Nerves’ as a moral failing (cowardice, weakness) is pop talk, not a map. Sympathetic is not evil and parasympathetic is not virtue. Left-brained/right-brained personalities do not belong on this page — that neuromyth sits with 1.4 and still fails. If a post says a playlist ‘calms your nerves’ as a character upgrade, ask which branch it even names.

Walkthrough

Heart and gut are autonomic, not a somatic essay and not a left-brain type. The kick-up is sympathetic (mobilize); the settle is parasympathetic (conserve). The naming of the street is a later thought, not the first author of the jump. Endocrine chemistry in blood may keep a tremble around longer than one synaptic hop — different postal system, still not a moral grade.

Variable on a startle study

Say the move in your own mouth. If you can write it, you own it — rereading is not the same thing.
